Michel de Marolles

Michel de Marolles, known as the abbot of Maroilles cheese , born with Genillé (Indre-et-Loire) the July 22nd 1600 and died in Paris the March 6th 1681, is a man of the church, translator and French, known historian for his collection of Estampe S.

Tonsure in 1610, he is abbot of Villeloin of 1626 with 1674. Author of very many verse translations of Latin authors, it one is accustomed of the living rooms, in particular of that of Madeleine de Scudéry.

He is known especially to have constituted funds of: 123000 prints, repurchased in 1667 by Colbert for Louis XIV against the sum of: 28000 pounds. This acquisition can be regarded as the birth certificate of the Cabinet of the prints of the royal Bibliothèque, which will administratively see the day only in 1720.
