Mice and men
Of the mice and the men ( Off Mice and Men ) is a novel of the American writer John Steinbeck published in 1937. It is with the Grapes of anger the most known work of the writer.
Summary
George Milton and Lennie Small are friends of childhood in escape, that their wandering on the roads of California results in working as days laborer of ranch in ranch. George deals with Lennie because he promised it with the aunt of this one. They dream to have one day a small-scale farming, to live there “like shareholders”, and to raise rabbits there. Lennie, equipped with a very great physical force, does not manage to dominate its power, but it is also intellectually defective, and passes constantly for a “idiot”, that will cause him death at the end.
Principal Characters
- George Milton: “small and ugly, brown of face, with anxious and piercing eyes, features marked with the head on the shoulders”.
- Lennie Small: “an enormous man, with formless face, with large pale eyes and broad falling shoulders.
Context
The account takes as a starting point worms of Robert Burns: “The plans best conceived mice and men often are not carried out” Through a serious writing and monocorde, it expresses all misery and human loneliness. In front of the enthusiastic reception that its novel causes, Steinbeck carried out a theatrical adaptation which is represented the same year.Two films of it were drawn:
