Mestre of camp
Mestre of camp was a military Grade of Ancien Mode.
Mestre of camp is the chief of a Régiment. It is under the authority of a general Colonel, which orders all the regiments of a weapon. When the load of general colonel is removed - in 1661 for the infantry - Mestre of camp takes the title of colonel. The regiments of cavalry, which on the other hand remain under the authority of a general colonel, are ordered individually by mestres of camp until the Révolution. Like that of Captain, the load of Mestre of camp is venal, i.e. purchasable and transmissible freely. Consequently, the kids of the high aristocracy could reach the rank at a very early age and thus be in good position to obtain promotions by seniority with the rank of Brigadier.
The rank of Mestre of camp appeared by the port of a pair of shoulder pad S with gilded or silver plated fringes.
The rank was removed with the Revolution and was replaced by that of Chef of brigade.
