It is old the Zancle founded between -750 and -730 by Greek colonists, renamed by Messénie NS exiled at fifth century BC. The catch of Messine by Mamertins in -264 starts the First Punic War.

In 1908, one of the largest earthquake of Europe entirely destroyed the city, leaving only few files. Fifty years ago, in June 1955, was held the Conférence to with it of Messine which was going to give rise to the European Union (in the form of European Economic community). Navigation
To pass the strait of Messina frightens always a little the yachtman which has so much is little read Homère. In fact, a pleasure boat of ten meters has to hardly fear effects of the current (primarily: swirls) for little which it avoids circulating in the vicinity immediate of banks. On the other hand, one will be wary: 1 - traffic transverse of the continent towards Messina and vice versa, extremely dense 2 - " wind of the détroit" (" vento dello stretto"), which blows at least 80% of time with 25 nodes and more. This wind is systematically of sector NR and follows banks. It occurs a little with the S of Capo Pelloro (extremity NR of the strait), attenuates regularly in direction of the S starting from the extremity S of the strait (with the height of Capo dell' Armi). Towards the East, it disappears brutally about with the height from Joniche Saltworks. This wind is particularly useful at the time of descent (N/S), because it is bearing and the sea is raised little (fetch of about 15 miles). It allows to a certain extent to oppose the effect of the current with the S of Messina for a boat which would pass from the NR to the S against the current (by 25 or 30 nds of wind, the " montante" - running S/N- is often reversed with the S of Messina and becomes sensitive only to the NR of this city). For a passage S/N, on the other hand, it blows full upright, obliges to draw from many edges (danger of the transverse traffic) and masks the benefit of the current in the South of Messina. The passage of the strait of the S towards the NR is almost never part of pleasure and one comes out from it most of the time perfectly wet. To contact the " compamare Messina" (maritime authority) to know the hours of maximum current N/S (" scendente")or S/N (" montante") These hours are given to the height of Messina and it is necessary to take account of the time necessary to reach this point. One can also ask for the hour of slack (" stanca") also given to the height of Messina. Not to hope to shelter winds of sector S in the wearing of Joniche Saltworks: the mole was carried by a storm and the basin is completely opened with S. On the other hand, it is a good halt in weather established to quietly wait the hour most favorable for a passage S/N.
