Massachusetts Government Act

The Massachusetts Government Act (act of government of Massachusetts) was voted by the Parlement of the United Kingdom and became a law the May 20th 1774. This act is one of the Intolerable Acts , or Punitive Acts , or Coercive Acts , of which the goal is to ensure the British Juridiction on the thirteen colonies of North America.

The act alienates the election of the advisers and assistants of the colony of Bay of Massachusetts, by making mandates by nomination, created by " commission of its Majesty, under the seal of Large-Bretagne" , mandates of which the “duration is left with the good pleasure of its Majesty”. What leaves the impotent colonists vis-a-vis the Clientélisme and with corruption. Before the vote of this Act , the Council had a right of Veto or that to name these advisers and assistants.

It is also expected that the governor of Its Majesty will name " all the judges of the courses lower of common right, the listeners, the Public prosecutor, the provost S, the marshals, the Justice of the Peace and all other civils servant appartenent with the service of the courses of justice" and " any vacancy of the positions of president and judges of the court superior of the aforesaid the province, since and after July 1st, 1774 ". The members of the Council were annually elected by a united commission chosen by the people, thus giving him some control on those which would hold these stations.

It moreover is mentioned than the Freehoders and inhabitants (who were in fact the government localde the Colony), except for an annual meeting intended to choose men in March or in May and the meetings necessary to the replacement of stations become vacant, should obtain the written prior agreement of the governor and that no subject would be discussed there, not having obtained the agreement of the governor.
