Masina

Masina is a commune of the east of the town of Kinshasa, located between the Pool Malebo at north and the Boulevard Lumumba at the south. It is one of the new popular quarters of Kinshasa particularly populated, and is also known under the nickname of “ China ”.

It shelters in particular the Marché of Freedom “ Me Zee Laurent Désiré Kabila ”, one of the largest markets of Kinshasa, which was built under the presidency of Laurent-Desired Kabila to reward the inhabitants for the district of Tshangu to have resisted the aggression in August 1998.

Masina, with the communes of Ndjili and Kimbanseke, belonged to the district of Tshangu.

Geography

Most of the commune is occupied by a wetland being neighborly the Pool Malebo, which explains the weak density of relative population of the commune. The urban part, stretching itself along the Boulevard Lumumba, however reached population densities comparable with those of the other communes of the heart of Kinshasa (approximately 50.000 inhabitants/km ²).
