Martigny , is a commune and Ville Valais (zip code 1920) of about 15.000 inhabitants (Martignerains or Octoduriens). Located with the elbow of the the Rhone, the crossing of the road axes of the Large-Saint-Bernard and the Simplon. It is about the third most important city of the canton, after Sion and Monthey.
History
Oppidum or Vicus of the Celtic tribe of the Véragres under the name of Octodure, it was the theater of the Bataille of Octodure in 57-56 av. J. - C. between the twelfth Roman legion ordered by Servius Galba and the Véragres combined with the Sédunes and the Nantuates.It is incorporated in the Roman Empire. Claude founds there towards 47 a Roman city, the Forum Claudii Augusti , quickly famous in Forum Claudii Vallensium to avoid confusion with the city of Aime called same manner, capital of the the Alps Grées. Martigny was the chief town of the area until the displacement of the Episcopal see with Sion at the 6th century.
In addition to the many Roman ruins, whose arenas in good state of conservation, the city shelters an important museum, the Fondation '' Pierre Gianadda '', with the international radiation, as well as the Château of Bâtiaz, built at the 13th century and whose project superintendent is undoubtedly the bishop of Sion, Landrit de Mont.
