Biography

Martialis, wire of Sabinus, was a Roman centurion, member of the personal guard of the emperor Caracalla.

Assassination of Caracalla

Macrin, the successor of Caracalla, is strongly suspecté to have charged Martialis with assassinating the emperor.

At the time of a voyage in direction of the temple of the god the Moon, in Carrhes (Harran) in Mésopotamie, Caracalla complained about evils of belly, also it made stop the convoy and went to be relieved, well off its guards, accompanied by only one servant. Martialis benefitted from this occasion for ruer on the emperor without defense, and to strike a mortal blow to him on the level of the clavicle, whereas this one had the turned back.

It was killed by German riders faithful to the emperor, whereas it tried to flee.
