The Maranhão is one of the States Brésil. It is located at the north of the North-eastern area. The Adjacent states are: Piauí, Tocantins and Pará.

Its capital is São Luis (978 824 inhabitants in 2005 and 1.227.659 for the metropolitan region).

Demographic distribution: urban: 59,5% rural: 40,5%.

The climate is tropical wet. The average temperature minimum is of 21°C, the maximum average: 32°C. Annual precipitations are of 1.200 mm to 2.000 mm and even more with the littoral. Maranhão is divided between the Amazonian influence in North and the Sertão, in the South.

It is in this State that the is located bases space of Alcântara.

The Natural park Lençois Maranhenses is a superb desert of dunes sand white, of which the hollows filled with fresh water form lagoons of a crystalline blue which extends on 150.000 hectares. Located at the east of São Shine, it is close to the delta of the Rio Parnaíba which contributed to its formation.

Principal cities (of more than: 100000 inhabitants): Caxias, Codó, Imperatriz, São Jose de Ribamar, Tiller.

Geography

With reduced altitudes and a rather plane topography, the state presents modest reliefs, with about 90% of its surface to the lower part of 300 meters altitude. The principal rivers are Rios Tocantins, Pindaré, Mearim, Parnaíba, and Itapecuru.

Economy

The economy is primarily based on the rice plantations, and mining industries of Amazonia.

Flag of the State

The flag of Maranhão was drawn by the poet Joaquim de Souza Andrade. The coloured bands (black, white and red) symbolize the three ethnicities which constituted the population, and the current mixture their lifestyles within the Brazilian company. The white star in the left higher corner symbolizes Maranhão itself, and is supposed to be the " Scorpii" beta; , as the constellation of the Scorpion is depicted on the national flag of Brazil.
