Mano Negra

The Mano Negra is a group of alternative Rock French formed in 1987 around its leader Manu Chao.

Origin of the name

Mano will negra (in Spanish “ mano will negra ” means “black hand”) is also the name of a group Andalusian Anarchiste of the end of the 19th century. In the Années 1880 the Andalusia is in prey with an economic serious attack. Misery and the famine gain, and the farm laborers revolt, plunder bakeries and burn that and there olive groves. The authorities carry out massive arrests.

A handle of the poor is stopped after a villainous murder that Guardia Civil makes endorse with clandestine association Mano Negra. Nothing proves that the anarchists are mingled with this assassination, nevertheless the alleged members of the group will be garrottés on June 14th, 1884 in the indifference of the anarchists of the north of Spain. Among the many victims allotted to omnipresent Mano Negra one finds no who is a landowner, an ecclesiastical or military authority. If the clandestine organization existed well, it seems obvious that she was used as a basis for a police handling. The shade of Mano Negra will be used to throw discredit upon the anarchistic activities and to justify the repression of all the Spanish revolutionary movement.

However it is by reading a STRIP CARTOONS of Rousseau that the idea came to the members from the group. Mano Negro was the name of a band of guerillas in South America. It is more the symbol with the black hand which rained to them.

Course

The group was born from the mixture of several groups, of which the Hot Pants and the Casse-pieds. In the seven years space (until their separation in 1994), the Mano Negra became a great group of Rock in France like abroad, in particular in Latin America. After their separation, their leader, Manu Chao continued a career solo. Their first album Patchanka leaves to Boucherie Productions (its owner, François Hadji-Lazaro, had played with Manu Chao in the group Los Carayos).

In the middle of the years 1980, the alternative groups flower with Paris and the remainder of France, and Mano is characterized by its multicultural music: Rock' roll 50 ' S, Reggae, Ska, Punk, rhythm' blues, Folk American ( Rock island line of Leadbelly, the same one which wrote Where did you Sleep Last Night taken again by Nirvana), Rap, Flamenco, etc And also by its number of spoken languages: three in this only album (English, Spanish and French). After the first album, the formation is stabilized with Manu with the Guitare, his/her Santi cousin with the battery, his/her brother Tonio (Antoine Chao) with the trumpet, Tom with the keyboards, OJ with the low , Phil with the percussions, Kropol with the Trombone, Daniel Jamet with the Guitare, all singing more or less. Well quickly success exceeds the capacities of the craft industry of Boucherie Productions, and Mano signs its second album, Puta' S Fever at Virgin before starting a first voyage in Latin America, in Peru and Mexico. Mano Negra had been parodied at the time by Unknown the, which camped the imaginary group Mano Verda (also parodying Green Negresses)/NegraBouch' Beat (thus adding a reference to Elmer Food Beat and the Butcher's assistants). In 1991 leaves King off Bongo , their third album, between java and Latin Musique, which they play in suburbs. With the Royal of Luxury and Philippe Decouflé, Mano Negra embarks for “Cargo liner 92” and makes a round in Latin America. Then a round in Japan from which the live one leaves: In the Hell off Patchinko (their fourth album, Word game between Patchanka, their first album, and Pachinko, a Japanese play). Mano Negra leaves at the end of 1993 for Colombia in the train. All this adventure is told by Ramón Chao, the father of Manu, in his book a train of ice and fire . The group becomes unstable (members leave, a singer named Fidel joined them in the course of road). The meetings of Put Babylon , their fifth album, are stretched over 2 years: it starts to be recorded in Ornano and finishes in Cologne in 1994 while passing by full with places. Then Manu Chao turns with Radio Bemba during 2 years, while continuing under the name of Mano Negra whereas the majority of the members of the group changed.
