Madaba
Madaba is a small town of 60.000 inhabitants in Jordan to 30 km in the south of Amman at the edge of the road of the Kings which leads to Kerak and with Petra.
History of Madaba
This site is site in the Bible. The Roman road and the vestiges of the urban architecture are always present in the modern center town but Madaba is famous for its Byzantine mosaics and Umayyades. It is in the north of the city where are the majority of the monuments in mosaics. During the Byzantine time - Umayyade, in the part of north - crossing by a Roman road bordered of columns - were built the Map church, the Hippolyte room, the church of the Virgin, the church of the Elias prophet with a crypt, the church of Saint-Martyrs (Al - Khadir) the Palate Flaring and the church of the Szunna family.The Church of the Apostle was built during the time of the Sergius archbishop, in 578. A central medal represents the sea (“thalassa”) in the shape of a woman who carries in her left hand a flag resembling rubber and its right-hand man is decorated bracelets.
The Church of the Virgin was built at the end of the 6th century, on a Roman road by using vestiges of a Roman monument. The mosaics of the church were restored during the time umayyade.
Museum
The Archaeological Museum opened its doors in 1962. Amongst other things, we can see there the Satyros mosaic and that of a dancer, the mosaic of the Paradise and the church of Suwaytha.
