Maërl

The maërl is a deposit which is formed in particular along the coasts of Brittany and which is composed of remains of Algue S impregnated navy of Calcaire often mixed with Sable and shelly remains.

The maërl is traditionally used in the coastal Agriculture Breton because it does not constitute a very good Amendement. The algae which compose it have the property to crystallize the elements Minéraux of sea water, it is thus very rich in Calcium and in Magnésium (micro Nutriment S the most requested by the plants from rapid growth) like in Fer and Oligo-élément S. Moreover the maërl corrects pH too low and thus allows the Plante to better absorb the Nutriment S of the ground.

The maërl is also used marginally in treatment of drinking water, for the remineralisation and the correction of the pH, in aquariophilie, like arranging alleys to replace the fine gravels.

The benches of maërl (living or dead) are a Biocénose remarkable, comparable all things considered with the Corail in the tropical zones; their destruction by the extractions (from now on led with industrial dredgers) threat the biodiversity in the coastal areas, and this exploitation will be most probably stopped in the next years, the more so as there exist substitutes for all the applications of the maërl. It already was almost stopped in the other European countries where there exists maërl (in particular with the the United Kingdom).
