Médiomatriques
The Médiomatriques called also " Médiomatrices" - Latin Mediomatrici - were a Gallic people. The current French department of the the Moselle corresponds to part of their territory. One of their oppidums was with Divodurum Mediomatricorum (Metz) with the confluence of the Pail and the Moselle on the Top-of-Holy-Crosses; two others preserved remarkably well are with Pierrevillers - Rombas and with Vitry-on-Flowering ash.
The first to mention these people is Jules César, in his Commentaires on the War of Gaules.
Territory
Their territory seems to be wide initially North of the Argonne to the the Rhine. In the south, their neighbors were the Leuques (Toul), in the West, the Rèmes (Rheims), and in the North-East the Trévires (Trier).
Lifestyle
In the higher valley of the Pail, they exploited the salt from where economic exchanges. One knows several specimens of mediomatric currencies. Oldest are out of gold and are imitations of the currencies Macedonians of Alexandre Large the. Others are out of pewter or bronze and represent a horse with or without rider.
Historical facts
In 52 av. J. - C. Médiomatriques send a quota of 5000 men to the Gallic army intended to help Vercingétorix with Alésia.
