Mâconnais
The Mâconnais is a small area of Saône-et-Loire sitting on part of the Eastern edge of the Massif Central and whose geographical limits recut about those of the Arrondissement of Mâcon. Its main cities are Mâcon, Cluny and Tournus.
Mâconnais, famous for its Wine S, with the Vine growing for economic main activity. Its vineyard, which extends from Tournus to the doors of the Beaujolais, is southernmost and vastest of the vineyards of Burgundy.
Geography
Mâconnais is composed of several North-South overall directed well differentiated geographical areas. The first is the valley of the Saone, narrow band of alluvia devoted to the cultures and the meadow where pass from important transportation routes (the Trunk road 6, the highway A6, railways of TGV and the line the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean, the the Saone channeled) and where are diversified activities. The second zone is that of the slopes whose slopes carry the famous vineyard of Mâconnais, zone characterized by a succession of links limestones - mounts of Mâconnais - separated by longitudinal valleys. In direction of the west, these mounts of Mâconnais gain in altitude and one stops partly crystalline door the culminating points of Mâconnais, the tops reaching 483 meters with the rock of Aujoux (to the height of Tournus) and 758 meters with the Mother-Case, while passing by the 579 meters of the Saint-Romain Mount; this zone is characterized by the breeding and the forest.
History of Mâconnais
In 1239, Mâconnais, repurchased with Jean de Braine, count de Mâcon, by Saint Louis, was attached to the Crown of France. Returned to the Duchy of Burgundy in 1434, it was definitively annexed to the Kingdom - with the whole of the Burgundy - after 1477, year of the defeat and of died of the duke Charles Bold the overcome by Louis XI.
Before the French revolution, Mâconnais, attached to the Burgundy, had its own states: particular States of Mâconnais. While the General states of Burgundy fixed the gift at the King, the particular States of Mâconnais, by convention, dealt with twelfth of this sum, the remainder being distributed on the whole of the province.
