Luxembourg-Dijon line

The line Luxembourg-Dijon is one of principal the transverse railway lines of the France. From North-South total orientation, it extends on 333 kilometers (including 16 in territory Luxembourg) and faces a seldom favorable layout and a profile. Linking the Lorraine , the Luxembourg and the extreme west of the Germany to the Rhone-native corridor , it supports a charged traffic, in particular as regards freight, because of the industrial activity, certainly declining but always important, of the Lorraine.

Layout and profile of the line

Originating in the Station of Luxembourg, the Luxembourg-Dijon line goes down immediately towards the south and crosses the border between Bettembourg and Zoufftgen. Its traffic already charged is reinforced with Thionville, whereas the line joined the course of the the Moselle, by the line coming from Germany, and especially by the " transverse the North-East " , which links the Lorraine with the ports and industries of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais. This is why the section connecting, through a very urbanized area, Thionville with the sorting of Woippy, largest of France, was quadrupled.

After having crossed the the Moselle to serve the Station of Metz, the line passes by again on left bank of the river on the level of the Ars-on-Moselle. The level of Novéant, a triangle gives access at the same time to the line Metz-Lérouville, for Paris, but also with the line towards Conflans-Jarny. Between Pagny-sur-Moselle and the Vandières-on-Moselle, two other junctions will allow as of June 2007 the access to LGV Is European for TGV connecting Paris to Metz or Nancy. A third triangle, the level of Frouard, gives access to the Gare of Nancy, which is accessible for the Metz-Dijon trains only with the help of one graining in station from Nancy.

With Toul, the line leaves the course of the Moselle, which makes an elbow on the level of this city, to continue full south. It joined with Neufchâteau the course of the Meuse and follows it until Merrey, where it is joined by the line coming from Nancy via Mirecourt. After crosshaving painfully crossed the high hills of the Bassigny, it joined with Chaudenay radial the Paris-Basle to separate a few kilometers from them later after the Gare from Culmont - Chalindrey. After having crossed the Plate of Langres, it enters Dijon by north and described a half-circle before reaching the station of Dijon-city.

Equipment

Because of its important traffic and its difficult profile, the line was electrified while running 25kV with the turning of the Sixties. The automatic Bloc luminous is in addition installed on the whole of the line. Coupled with the existence of active garages with the north of Nancy, this equipment allows an important theoretical output.

Traffic

If the traffic freight is very important thanks to the industrial importance of Lorraine, the service road travellers appears a little bit in withdrawal, with only 3000 daily travellers between Toul and Culmont in 1993. They are actually mainly trains broad outlines (TGV or Corail), the service road FOR THE THIRD TIME being weak in the south of Frouard. On the other hand, the north of this city, the contribution of the line of Nancy allows an explosion of the traffic FOR THE THIRD TIME: the relation Nancy - Metz - Thionville - Luxembourg is the first and principal service Métrolor, and its clocking is announced quickly.
