Lude

Lude is a common French, located in the department of the the Sarthe and the area Pays of the Loire.

Its inhabitants is called Ludois.

Geography

Lude is in the south of the the Sarthe between Mans, Angers and Tours. The city is crossed by the Loir.

The commune is bordering on Aubigné-Racan, Broc, Chenu, Coulongé, Dissé-under-the-Lude, the Bruère-on-Dormouse, the Vault-with-Cabbages, Lustred-Pringé, Saint-Germain-with Arcé, Savigné-under-the-Lude and Thorée-the-Pines.

History

The castle of Lude overhangs the valley of the Loir of its four powerful round towers.

In spite of the apparent regularity of its plan in quadrilateral, the castle knew several successive states and of many modifications which even made swivel its orientation of 180° in XVIIIesiècle.

To Xesiècle, the primitive fortress, “ the castellum Lusdi ” belongs to the counts of Anjou. Because of its position, it is used to defend the Anjou against the incursions of the Normands, then of the English during the Guerre One hundred Year old.

In 1343, salt becomes a state monopoly by an ordinance of the king Philippe VI of Valois, which institutes the gabelle , the tax on salt. The Anjou belongs to the countries of " large gabelle" and includes/understands sixteen special courts or " attics with sel" , of which that of Lude.

Under the Old Mode, Lude belonged to the secondary seneschalsy of Baugé dependant on the principal seneschalsy of Angers.

In 1790, the north-eastern part of the Anjou, also called High-Anjou, including/understanding, Lude, the Arrow and going until the limits of Castle-of-Dormouse, will be attached to the very new department of the the Sarthe. Since this area the Maine angevin is sometimes called.

The castle of Lude belongs today to the count Louis-Jean de Nicolay. (Under the castle, while passing by its imposing ditches you will find undergrounds).

Lude is twinned with Genazzano, a provincial town of Rome in Italy.
