Lucky Luke
Lucky Luke is a Cow-boy of Cartoon created by the draftsman and Belgian scenario writer Morris with the any end of the year 1946. The series will know its apogee with the collaboration of Rene Goscinny (scenario writer) between 1957 and 1977.
The first stories were diffused in Spirou of 1946 ( Arizona 1880 ) at 1968 ( Foot-tender the ), then by Pilote of 1967 ( the cousins Dalton ) at 1973 ( the ballade of Dalton ) before appearing in the form of albums.
Characters
In English, the name of the hero means “ Luc the lucky ”. The hero is not only lucky as its name suggests it, but it is as a fine trigger and known like “ the man who draws more quickly as his shade ”, which represents the drawing with the back of the albums where one sees Lucky Luke drawing on his shade whereas this one did not declad yet.
During all its adventures, the costume of Lucky Luke remains immutable: white hat, red scarf, yellow shirt, black waistcoat, jean, boots, belt and Colt.
Lucky Luke meets all the mythical characters of the Far West, initially the four Frères Dalton (who die at the end of the episode in accordance with the history), followed their caricatures, the cousins Dalton, perpetual escaped prisoners of the penitentiary where “day before” the very stupid Chien Rantanplan. One will also see, in very free interpretations, the judge Roy Bean, Jesse James, Frederic Remington, the Mormon community , Billy the Kid, Calamity Jane and even Sarah Bernhardt. Its faithful Cheval Jolly Jumper is, contrary to Rantanplan, particularly intelligent: it sometimes happens to him to play the failures or dice with Lucky Luke (and the horse can cheat very well…). Several times, the goal of Jolly Jumper is to travel, him also, once " with cheval" , then it is able at Lucky Luke to have to carry its horse, because of part of dice lost.
A constant of the albums is the departure of the hero towards the setting sun at the end of the album. Sometimes for the Goscinny period, the two authors had fun to spice their stories of imaginary details with which they associated, malicieusement, an asterisk which returned to “(*) Authentic”.
One also crosses some contemporary personalities in certain albums, in particular Louis de Funès and Patrick Préjean in the Gangster penguin , Jack Palance in Phil Defer in the album of the same name, or Lee Van Cleef in Eliot Belt in Bargain hunter . In the Cursed Ranch , Serge Gainsbourg appears as a drunkard, and Lucky Luke will help an old woman to move in a house called the Bates ranch, like Norman Bates of Psychose . The architecture of the house is in any point similar to that of film of Alfred Hitchcock. Remainder, the large scenario writer will be owner of a saloon in diligence .
Its counterpart of end
- “ I' m has poor lonesome cow-boy
- and has long far way from home. ”
Setting in music by the jazzman Claude Bolling.

Anecdote
Goscinny, then appointed scenario writer of the series, wishing to bring together its characters under the same banner, Lucky Luke passed from the editions Dupuis to the editions Dargaud. Morris, a little frustrated lack of dynamism of Dupuis in the promotion of its character, ended up accepting this migration. Well took some to him: Dargaud, already made rich by Goscinny and, inter alia, its Astérix, invested much in the commercial development of Lucky Luke, by making the third larger success of edition of the time, after Tintin and the small Gallic one.
Cinema and television
The series was also carried to the cinema and on television. Not to run up against the American public, the hero had to exchange his eternal cigarette end for a grass bit, which it had already done in the albums drawn by concern of not giving the example of a hero smoker to the young readers. In the same way, certain “stereotypes” were removed: “Chinese launderers or restorers” or “Mexicans making the nap”Lastly, Lucky Luke was the hero of a film of cinema in 1991. The actor Terence Hill put it in scene while incarnating the character titrates, but it was a failure. The humorists Eric and Ramzy raised the torch by writing a new scenario: Dalton . Realized by Philippe Haim, the film left for the festivals Christmas 2004. Although the two humorists pretexted a homage to the work of Morris, the film abounds in accessories mild nutters such as for example a magic hat, which is completely out of the spirit of the cartoon of origin. Most of the media, especially in Belgium from where the draftsman is originating, fustigated the duet of humorists by showing them to exploit in a very bad way an inheritance of the Belgian culture and by French-speaking extension to only financial ends.
