Lucien Descaves

Lucien Descaves (Paris, the March 18th 1861 - 1949) is a literary man, journalist, novelist and dramatic author.

Its life

Wire of a engraver, it will pay homage to this profession in a study entitled the Tinea (1885).

In 1887, Descaves signs with Paul Margueritte, Paul Bonnetain and others a proclamation against Zola at the time of its novel the Earth . It is the Manifeste of the five. Lucien Descaves particularly made itself famous for a novel antimilitarist, entitled the Non-coms , for whom it was translated into Court of Assizes for insults with the army and insults with the moralities. It is during its military service, that it finished as quartermaster-sergeant, that it draws the scenes of a believed realism which punctuate the fiction. Discharged in 1890, it gave other works in the same tone and container of the violences considered to be excessive by some (Louis Bethlehem) or of a brutal sincerity for others (Larousse).

L is writer with the newspaper the Dawn at the time of the Affaire Dreyfus, to which it gives its support.

It holds starting from 1916 the literary column which remains the strong point of the Journal .

In 1927, it signs in company of Alain, Louis Guilloux, Henry Poulaille, Jules Romains, Severine…, the petition (appeared on April 15th in the review Europe) against the law on the general organization of the nation for the time of war which repeals any intellectual independence and any freedom of thought.

It belongs to the founding members of the Académie Goncourt.

He dies on September 6th, 1949 in Paris.
