Low-Austria

The Low-Austria ( German Niederösterreich in ) is largest of the federate States of Austria compared to the surface and the larger second compared to the number of inhabitants. It divides borders with the Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the States federate High-Austria, Styrie and Burgenland. It completely surrounds the federate State of Vienna, of which it was separate in 1922. Following the survey of electorate in 1986 Sankt Pölten (Holy Hippolyt) became the capital of the State Low-Austria. (Other candidates were Baden, Krems and Wiener Neustadt.)

Geography

Corresponding to the various landscapes Low-Austria is grouped in four areas, Weinviertel (district of wine) and Waldviertel (wood district) in north as well as Mostviertel (district of cider) and Industrieviertel (district of industry) in the south of the the Danube.
