History

After decades of debates, it was finally decided to equip Oporto with a system of subway. This one can be also considered as a transport system of suburbs since it develops mainly apart from the city towards its periphery. The first phase of work started at the end of the years 1990. At the end of 2002 was inaugurated the first line. This phase was completed semi-2006 with the opening of the line E connecting Oporto to its airport. The second phase is still under discussion. Rolling stock is resulting from the factories Bombardier and is the same one as the tram of Strasbourg or Milan. The food is air and not on the ground. The major part of the network is surface. The subway became the pride of the agglomeration portuense and is largely used like tool of town planning, which is innovator in a country where this concept of city planning is not very widespread.
