List pontifical vice-legates in Avignon
List of the pontifical vice-legates with Avignon
The pontifical vice-legates in Avignon had as a function to assist the legate in the administration of the city.
The function became permanent starting from 1542. The vice-legates took an increasingly large importance, so much so that in 1691 the function of legate was removed and that they remained alone with the government of Avignon.
The vice-legates thus managed the city until the fastening of Avignon to the France (1791).
