The American higher education, exempted in the whole of the American universities , is famous as being best world. Thus, a study of the university of Shanghai establishing the classification of the 500 best universities of the world in 2004, according to the number of Nobel Prize obtained and the quantity of articles published in the academic reviews, places 17 American universities in the 20 first, Harvard appearing in first position.

In general, each State has at least two public universities, called " University of État" ( University off of the State ) and " University of State of État" ( of the State State University ), the first being often more prestigious than the second. For example, in California, the two large public universities are the the University of California ( University off California ), very selective, and the Université of State of California ( California State University ), less famous.
