Lipetsk

Lipetsk ( Russian Липецк in ) is a town of Russia, center administrative of the Oblast de Lipetsk. It is built on the edges of the river Voronej, to 508 km in the south-east of Moscow. Its population rises with: 504417 in 2004.

History

Lipetsk is mentioned for the first time in the chronicles of the 13th century. Lipetsk means " place close to the tilleuls" , which connects it with Leipzig and Liepaja. The city was destroyed in 1284 by the Mongolian . In 1702, Pierre Large the ordered the construction of a Fonderie in Lipetsk, close to layers of Iron ore, in order to manufacture projectiles of Artillerie. In 1796, Lipetsk had become one of the main cities of the government of Tambov. In 1879, the city accommodated a congress of the members of the revolutionary organization Zemlya I volya (Ground and freedom).

Of 1926 with 1933, Lipetsk accommodated a center of drive for pilots of the Reichswehr and of test for the German planes, following a secret agreement made between the Weimar Republic and the Soviet Union to circumvent the Traité of Versailles.

The construction of a large iron and steel combine starting from 1931 marked the starting point of a rapid urban development.

A vast steelworks was built in Lipetsk during the First Five-year plan, between 1931 and 1934. The metallurgical Combine of Novolipetsk (NLMK) was privatisé in 1993. It is in 2006 the third steel producer of Russia with more than 9 million tons of steel. The complex extends on 27 km ² and employs more: 40000 workers. Lipetsk has another iron and steel plant (Svobodny Sokol), a factory of tractors (LTZ) and an important factory of refrigerators (Stinol, with Italian capital).
