Leopold Gmelin , born the August 2nd 1788 and dead the April 13rd 1853, is a German chemist .
Gmelin is the son of Johann Friedrich Gmelin (1748-1804), naturalist and chemist. He studies the Médecine and the Chimie with Göttingen, Tübingen and Vienna. In 1813, he becomes professor-assistant of chemistry to Heidelberg, in 1814, he is professor-extraordinary and, in 1817, professor-ordinary of chemistry and medicine.
He discovers the Ferrocyanure of potassium (1822) and writes a Handbuch DER anorganischen Chemie (first edition: 1817 - 1819, fourth edition 1843 - 1855), considered as a lasting reference book of many years. It takes its retirement in 1852 and dies in Heidelberg.
