Le Monde

Le Monde is a Journal daily French founded by Hubert Beuve-Méry in 1944. He wants to be daily reference. Its paid diffusion was of 353.000 specimens over the period 2005-2006. (voir : the Press in France ). Le Monde is thus diffused much less than Western France , the Team or 20 minutes for example. Generally, its leading line is rather of Center-left, according to the French political spectrum usually used. Le Monde is a newspaper " soir"   ; the newspaper appears the afternoon, the following day.

History

The first number of the Monde appears the December 18th 1944, dated from the December 19th on only one page. Le Monde succeeds the newspaper the Time whose it takes again the format and the presentation. The Général de Gaulle, which wished to equip France with a large newspaper turned towards the international one, is a motive fluid of its creation, carried out by Hubert Beuve-Méry which founds a Limited liability company to the capital for 200  000 francs divided into 200 actions.

1951 sees the creation of the Société of the writers , then 1968 that of the two companies of the employees and the executives. The employees of the newspaper hold a central place in the management of the newspaper. The daily newspaper knows financial problems in the Eighties and Nineties. In 1994, it exchanges the statute of limited liability company for that of Public limit company to directory and board of trustees.

Le Monde was chaired by Jean-Marie Colombani until May 22nd, 2007, and its Rédaction is directed by Eric Fottorino since 2006 (Edwy Plenel, one of the principal persons in charge of the drafting gave its resignation the November 29th 2004). It is the principal daily publication of the group the Life it Monde.

Le Monde settles and will remain a long time in the requisitioned buildings of the Temps (of which he will become owner in 1956) and will be of this fact often named “the daily newspaper of the street of the Italians”. After the sale, by Andre Fontaine, of his seat for financial reasons, Le Monde settles Rue Falguière (15th), then Rue Claude-Bernard (5th) and finally in 2006 Boulevard Auguste-Blanqui (13th).

Ousting of Jean-Marie Colombani of the Le Monde daily newspaper

The May 22nd 2007, the Company of the writers of World (SRM), which has a Right to veto on the nomination of the president of the directory, had rejected the candidature of Jean-Marie Colombani, candidate for his succession. The boards of trustees of the companies Associated Le Monde and Partenaires (LMPA), Le Monde SA and Security company of the World named Pierre Jeantet president of the directory of each one of these companies the July 2nd 2007.

Pierre Jeantet could not have been named on June 28th, because the representatives of the Company of the Writers of the World and the Civil society of the personnel of the group of the publications of the catholic Life (SCPVC) had left the room of the board of trustees of company LMPA to protest against the disputed re-election of Alain Minc with the head of the board of trustees. Other personalities are had a presentiment of to replace Alain Minc.

Criticisms

In 2003, a series of works and work criticized neutrality and the deontologic rigor of the newspaper. Economic assessment

Le Monde RCS Paris B 399.223.684 does not communicate its turnover but the Company of the Readers of the World, with dimensions on the open market of Euronext Paris (code ISIN FR0000034779) announced a turnover of 462 million euros in 2002. Le Monde showed in 2006 a net loss of 14,3 million euros, to compare with a net loss of 27,9 million euros in 2005 and 54,2 million in 2004.

Publications

Edition paper

Le Monde has the effect of being the shortly after its day of publication. Its edition of the day is thus available as of midday to Paris, the evening even in the big cities of France and everywhere else the following day, including with the international one. Always called " daily newspaper of the soir" , Le Monde actually became a daily newspaper of midday today. Le Monde is present on Internet since the December 19th 1995. The LeMonde.fr site has its own drafting, its own buildings, distinct from those of the newspaper; it takes again the articles of the newspaper Le Monde , but also of other sources (news agencies etc).

An important part of the textual contents of the newspaper is accessible free the every day, at the beginning of afternoon. The articles of less than three days are also freely accessible, but without the iconographic and infographic documentation of the newspaper.

For the access to the Files, the subscriber with the newspaper has a limited and free right of consultation, if not the reading of the files is paying.
