History

The origin of the name of Lavannes is dubious. Lavenna about 1190, Lavenne in 1248, Lavania in 1252 and Lavanna in 1272. The etymology returns to the possible name of the Gallo-Roman owner of the soil at the origin of the village, Lavenus or Lavinus. However the occupation of Lavannes is much older, going back approximately to 1000 before J.C., as the archaeological excavations reveal it and the discovery of five necropoles and three habitats.le name of Lavannes would be a deformation of old Gallic aawen-have it, which means place close to the brook. The brook could be the Ru which runs with one kilometer and half in the North-East of the village. Its source would have been at the origin much more close to the village.

Attic with corn of the Roman empire, the pax romana covers “Gaulle hairy” of a network of road in the ancient way from Rheims to Trier which crosses the soil of Lavannes. After this boom, the cruel incursions, of IIIe in Ve century, ruin the neighborhoods of Rheims. Starting from XIe century, economic prosperity returns and this faith in the future leads to the construction of the church Lambert saint. For better defending oneself against the invasions Philippe-Auguste obliges the cities to strengthen itself, those require villages located at three places to take part in their defense by the construction of ditches or ramparts. Lavannes will thus be surrounded by ditches. To communicate with the plain, five doors are at the end of the main streets: the street of Cheffossé, the street of Burisse, the street of Like, the New street, the street of Hamée. These fortifications will appear nevertheless insufficient against the English during the One hundred Year old War.

The church of Lavannes is one of the medieval monuments most remarkable of the district of Rheims. It is built on a quay level with approximately three meters with the top of the ground. It has being built on the site of an old building probably dating from the 8th century to honor Saint Lambert, the owner of the parish, which was martyrisé into 708. To date the monument more precisely, we can be based on the notes written by the Flodoart canon on the life of Holy Flotilde, native of Lavannes and nun with Avenay.

The manuscript speaks about Holy Flotilde which would have been buried into 942 in the church of its village after its death. We do not have any indication on the place of the burial of this Holy because no tumulary stone indicates the existence of a crypt where it can rest This church, in its various constructions, dates from XIIe and 13th centuries. It is built on a outline drawing of Latin cross, the purity of its style remained intact. The sight external and interior of the church produces an imposing effect.
