Laurel and Hardy formed the comic couple most famous of the 20th century, a Duo of the American cinema of the Inter-war period, joining together Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy and based on a power struggle and of protection, often in ritualized and polished brawls (not of social criticism). They played in many burlesques films dumb and speaking.

The school studies very quickly weary the Stan young person, who dreams only of one thing " to go up on the planches". His/her father does not oppose his vocation and since 1905, the assistance to find his first roles.

He begins thus in the music English hall, the troop of Fred Karno and more particularly in the Pantomime in the part Mumming birds . The main role is held by Charlie Chaplin, their ways respective will cross often thereafter.

About 1912, the troop leaves in round to the the United States. The part stops, the principal high-speed motorboat Charlot was discharged by the studios of Hollywood. Stan settles then in California and assembles its own spectacles only or accompanied by his future wife. Quickly, it is pointed out by the cinema and turns for Universal some dumb short films pastiches of the kind Slapstick under the pseudonym of Hickory Hiram.

Laurel and Hardy in duet

In the life Stan Laurel is the reverse of its character to the screen, in the duet it is him the brain. Their first meeting with the screen took place in 1917 in has Lucky Dog , they divided then the poster in films produced by Hal Roach during the years 1920. The duet was formed officially at the time of the film The Second Hundred Years in 1927. In the versions in French language our heroes were doubled by French-speaking actors expressing itself with a Anglo-American accent: In Men O' War , about Lewis Forster, in 1929, the cinema of Hollywood speaks now about the United States of America, and them doubled versions dispatch with the four corners of the world two of its heroes more confusing: Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Let us see the version doubled for the French public of this American film from which the action does not occur to France: why thus in this French version Laurel and Hardy they in French with an accent nasillard speak each other amplified by the high tone about Hardy, transposed by the actors of doubling who were allotted to them: Fernand Rauzena and Richard Œstermann (and, as from 1935, Frank O' Neill and George Matthews)? For us, public French-speaking person, this accent American belongs to the character of the two accomplices, their charm, their drolery…

The explanation of this accent dates in fact from the advent from speaking: the Postsynchronization not being yet at the point, the need for turning several versions of the same film was essential for export. Often, of the actors in foreign languages the high-speed motorboats replaced some, which was hardly possible for our duet. Also carried out it themselves of the French and German versions their first talkies (speaking) with very strong accents because they were unaware of the languages. In France, the success of this accent was such as it was not more conceivable henceforth to double them differently.
