Lateran

The Lateran is a site of Rome, belonging today to the State of the Vatican City.

It draws its name from the Laterani , family Patricien which did not have her palate there. Confiscated by Néron in 67, it falls then to the Roman Catholic church, which builds there:

  • the Midsummer's Day Basilica of Lateran, whose pseudo Donation of Constantin sanctions the use as cathedral of Rome and church-mother of all the churches of the world ( omnium Urbis and Orbis ecclesiarum to subdue and caput );

  • the Palate of Lateran, pontifical residence of 313 with 1304.
  • the Baptistère of Lateran is the very first baptistry in the world and it is a reference.

During the history of the Church, it accommodates five Concile regional S oecumenical and several councils:

  • 487 : This council discussed the rehabilitation of the lapsi which had failed during persecutions

  • 649: bilingual Ier council Latin-Greek, it was opposed to the positions of Constantinople
  • 769: regional council of Lateran;
  • 1123 : I {{er}} council of Lateran;
  • 1139 : II {{E}} council of Lateran;
  • 1179 : III {{E}} council of Lateran;
  • 1215 : IV {{E}} council of Lateran;
  • 1512 - 1517: V {{E}} council of Lateran.

It is also the place of signature of the Accords of the Lateran, concluded between the the Holy See and the Italian State, respectively represented by the cardinal Gasparri and Benito Mussolini.

The President of the French Republic is honorary canon Midsummer's Day of Lateran.
