Large-Synthe (in Dutch: Groot-Sinten ) is a common French, located in the department of the Northern and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Its inhabitants is called the Grand Synthois (be) .

Geography

Frontier and at the west of Dunkirk, 6 km of its center, Large-Synthe is located on the maritime frontage of the triangle densément populated, urbanized and equipped with transportation routes of our continent, indeed Large-Synthe is connected to Lille by the highway A25, with the Channel tunnel via Calais by A16/E40 and Brussels by a16/E40.

This maritime proximity confers a moderate oceanic climate.

The city was brought to give up its natural coast for better accommodating the boats of the whole world thanks to the deep water port of Dunkirk.

In the French Flanders being completed on the mounts of Artois, Large-Synthe has a fabric of axes of communication diversified: free highways on long distances, parks TGV in Dunkirk putting Paris at 1:30 of the coast; proximity of the Channel tunnel, inland waterways interior, first marshalling yard of France in treated volume…

History

It is old story

Because, before the contemporary city, there was a rural village of farms surrounded by fields gained on the sea with the wire of the centuries: starting from the 8th century, knowledge and the work of the Bénédictin S allowed to channel water by having recourse to the drainage works which ran out in the rivers like the Aa or directly in the sea. New grounds are thus made cultivable by the lords and abbeys because the power, the capacity, came from the ground, its possession, its capacity to nourish the families. And although living a coastal village, Synthois remained a long time of the farmers to the shelter of the dunes. The count Jean made build a first dam as of 1280 on the level of the current street which bears its name. It was difficult to thrive with calm when one belongs to the maritime Flanders: alliances, marriages, successions, cyclic hegemonies of various abbeys, strategic issue enters the three great powers of, S: Spain (which has the Netherlands then), England and France… How much battles in Flanders decided fate of Synthois… Dunkirk represented an interesting port in this zone at the fluctuating borders and its history is rich and glorious. After a particularly fatal cholera epidemic in 1870 arrived by boat at the port, the end of the 19th century was one more stable and prosperous time for the synthoises families. Mow, Dunkirk was going to be found with the first cabins in the theater of the operations at the time of the two world wars…

1914-1939

At the time of the First World War, the banks of the Yser are a less famous frontline in France today than the Chemin of the Ladies. In spite of the efforts of the Germans, Dunkirk “does not fall” not and serves even as “fortified camp”. The beaches make it possible to bring the troops of the Commonwealth thanks to the aerodromes arranged around the city. A visit with the war memorials of Ypres and Dixmude gives all the dimension of these terrible years… As of the return of peace, the first local factory leaves ground along the channel of Bourbourg. The group Carel and Fouché manufactures barges there. This factory employed up to 400 paid between the two wars (the city then does not count more than 3500 inhabitants). The city of Deux-Synthe is built to lodge working and foremen. Thanks to the arrival of electricity in 1923, the prosperity of the village east of return since it allowed the transformation of the agricultural produce and a substantial added-value…

The second world war

The Second world war was going to upset Large-Synthe in an irremediable way. It begin with the Drôle from war but the German offensive by the Meuse and the Sum encircles the Anglo-French troops in the pocket of Dunkirk. It finishes with extraordinary the Opération Dynamo which allows many British soldiers and French to re-embark for England on a heteroclite but heroic flotilla whose 60ième birthday was celebrated in 2000 in Dunkirk. Slowed down by the opening of the valves which flood the grounds lower than the sea level, the Germans will retain the stratagem when in their turn they are folded up on the city in 1944. They will go only once Berlin fallen, one day after the signature of the armistice, on May 9th, 1945. Meanwhile, during the Occupation, the “airfield” is of an interest to the eyes of the invaders. They transform the farm of small Prédembourg into Kommandantur . The English bombard the village sometimes in order to destroy these airports, from where took off of the German planes taking part in the Blitzkrieg against England. After the unloading of June 1944, the hope reappears in the population but the allied opening after the end of the Bataille of Normandy will run up here against an enemy on the defensive, ready with very to preserve its Dunkirk position. The Largeone have all in memory the night of September 15th, 1944. The villagers still present at this moment were driven out of their residence in a few hours taking along only well little of things and then seeking to place itself in the family, inside the grounds, already released more. 239 of the 371 houses of the commune were completely destroyed as well as the church, dynamited. 132 were disaster victims and no house remained intact.

Of return 8 months later, the inhabitants can only note that there is nothing any more. They must set out again to zero and the years which follow are difficult. They pain to rebuild their residence, monopolized by the urgency to make again the ground cultivable, traumatized by those which died because them mines while wanting to give their fields in state. The American and Canadian godmothers of war send accounts - checks and parcels, the de Gaulle General grant to the village a “Military Cross” but with the daily newspaper, done everything defect… and already, the village is not rebuilt according to the ancestral foundations…

The modern epopee: 1960 at our days

The seism is not finished since in spite of this vital bond which links the Largeone with their ground, France wishes to find its row of economic power, turned towards the future. For that one amongst other things needs steel resulting from a powerful factory: it will be established precisely on the grounds synthoises.

The states of heart of the market-gardeners and farmers, who so much gave themselves to be raised, do not weigh heavy in these stakes of European size because for the industrial site, it is necessary to build a true city to place those which do it and there will work. A mushroom town thus will leave ground.

It is then a generation of pioneers which will come to project Large-Synthe in one modern era. Does hay of the past, one discover vestiges of galleons by digging the foundations of the factory? That's no problem! It is tomorrow which imports. The residences are hardly completed that they are already occupied: in” city” or HLM. All, Large-Synthois of stock and new arrivals, have then jointly that their life is made to ruptures… all the families give up one” elsewhere” inevitably reassuring for a eldorado in perpetual building site in the most septentrional city of France. All uprooted, and especially the women who follow their husbands without other motivations that of wife and mother. The harbor infrastructure then supports the establishment of other industry groups in maritime Flanders, benefitting and generating in their turn from flows in all kinds: transport, energies, labor… up to a point of inflection which is about 1975, consequence of the Oil crisis but also of the beginning of a reflection to be interested in the improvement of the framework of life, with the aspiration of one return to nature. This will be checked in the district of Courghain, conceived to develop the “family wellbeing in a respectful landscape of the Flanders” while being modern and innovating and by the decision artificially to create a “green lung” in Puythouck. Many young adults remember to have planted “their tree” in class. The education job with nature started already. Progress is a little short-sighted and the urgency made law but since 1982, of the built HLM 20 years before are destroyed.

Arrived at a point of rupture of its constant growth, the city must learn how “to blow”, to find its rate/rhythm. Thanks to an optimal use of governmental financings within the framework of the plan “Social development of the districts”, the city transfigures and launches the axes which are fundamental city today. Thus, Large-Synthe became a green city, which seeks essential balance to make a success of the 21e century.

  • the various town halls Synthoises

The war was right of the sand brick town hall, of Flemish, with the pinions characteristic, typical style of the area. The shutters and woodworks were often repainted colors pimpantes for Easter. It was located between the cemetery and the Agricultural credit, with the school.

Completely destroyed during the war, the town hall, with the image of much of Synthois, was satisfied with a provisional Canadian country cottage symbolizes well the difficult life which was organized in these hutments of fortune, facts of wood and bituminized paperboard, indicated UK100…

The modern lines of years 1950/60 characterize the new town hall inaugurated in 1958 per Julien d' Hulster. It was quickly the theater of a total upheaval since the arrival of Usinor went " booster" the village in a very artificial way. It is used from now on for the meetings of associations.

Its size, answering the needs for a village, was not adapted any more to the modern city which saw the population multiplying by ten and its center moved around the current communal house designed by the cabinet of architects Allain and Prieur (see photo). She knew a small enlarging on the second floor which did not denature the unit.

  • the history of the churches synthoises also deserves some explanations which go hand in hand with that of the town halls…

There remain only some stereotypes of the squat church of Romance style built in 1757 and dynamited with 600 kg of explosives by the Germans the night of June 16th, 44. Only part of the bronze of the bell could be recovered to melt the “Jacqueline” who resounds in Saint-Jacob. Not passage of one of the ways towards Compostelle at the 11th century because in particular of the legend of Kruysbellaert, This characteristic justifies the saint who gives his name to the church. Moreover another vestige of the old church is enchased in the current one: a statue of wood the representative. Another more contemporary reproduction accommodates us on the principal frontage.

The stained glasses are one time which lasted little and they are thus likely to become notable for the historians of art: they are the work of one 1st price of Rome and are still a representation of the holy characters before the abstraction does not spread in the modern churches…

What is the case in the second, the Saint-Joseph church, built in the Eastern half of the territory by évêché which saw the population synthoise increasing. With its volumes and the use of the typical concrete of the years 1970, and contrary to certain buildings of this time, it crosses time well and keeps a strong personality even if it is from now on unutilised.
