Lake Tibériade

The Lake Tibériade , of a surface of 160 km ², is a fresh water lake located in the North-East of Israel at more than 200 m below the sea level. It is crossed by the river the Jordan. Fish rich person, it is famous for his violent storms because of the differences in temperature with the surrounding heights.

Other names: sea or lake of Kinneret (coming from Hebrew kinnor which means “in the shape of quadrant”), Lake Génésareth , Sea of Galilee (in the Évangile S).

It constitutes today, an important hydraulic resource for the country. Work of drains allowed the supply of the cities fresh water and the irrigation agricultural ends, primarily in the Negev desert .

On western bank of the lake is built the éponyme city Tibériade. Capital of the Galileo, it founded was built by Hérode in the honor of the Roman Emperor Tibère. It is today a seaside resort of 31.000 inhabitants, famous for its hot sources and its dry climate.

Since the occupation of the plate of the Golan in 1967, the Eastern bank is entirely controlled by Israel and the Syria is not any more one country bordering in the facts. The return of the control of part of Eastern bank and the Jordan by the latter are in the middle of the peace processes between the two countries, the principle of Israeli withdrawal of the plate of the Golan being now allowed.

It is on its banks whose wooded hills and the small fertile plains sheltered many villages of fishermen and farmers that many episodes of the life of Jesus, reported in the Évangiles, took place (the alleviated storm (LLC 8,12,25), miraculous fishing (LLC 5,4-6), the last appearance with the disciples whereas it was ressuscity (Jn 21,1s)).

Archeological sites

There exist many archeological sites and historical around the Lake Tibériade of which:

  • Bethsaïde, old city, on northern bank of the lake, close to Jumble;
  • Jumble, old city, on northern bank of the lake, Hebrew Kfar (village) and Nahum (prophet). Vestiges of the synagog in which came to preach Jesus and where he cures the slave of the Centurion. House of holy Pierre;
  • Chorozaïn ;
  • Dome of the Thabor mount, the place of the transfiguration of Christ;
  • Hattin, site of the Battle of Hattin (1187) at the time which Saladin beat 1200 cross knights;
  • Koursi, the place of the miracle of the cure of two démoniaques by Christ;
  • Mausoleum of Rabbi Akiva, on a hill overhanging the lake;
  • Mount of the Blisses, a hill in the north of Tabgha, site of the sermon on the Mountain where Jesus proclaimed: “happy the craftsmen of peace because they will be called sons of God ”;
  • Tabgha, on western bank, the place of the miracle of the fish and miracle of the loaves and fishes by Christ;
  • Old cemetery of Tibériade, tomb of Maïmonide (Rambam), philosopher, physicist, scientist of the 12th century author of Mishna (interpretation of the Jewish Law);
  • Close to the hot sources of Tibériade, tomb of Rabbi Meir Baal Hanes;
  • Yardenit, in the extreme south of the lake, where water reconstitutes the Jordan, high place of baptism, close to the place where Jean officiated the Baptist. Today, of the pilgrims go there to be made baptize.

During the winter 1986, was discovered in the lake, a single specimen of Roman boat (length 8,3 m, width 2,6 m, depth 1,2 m) of fishing and goods transport.
