Lake Mauvoisin

The Lake Mauvoisin is an artificial lake retained by a Barrage - vault located in the canton of the Valais in Suisse. It is at the bottom of the Val of Bagnes at an altitude of 1961 meters and extends on approximately 4,9 km. Its superfice is of 2,08 km and its maximum depth is about 180 meters.

Glacial rout

Before being an artificial reserve, the Lake Mauvoisin was natural and was formed sometimes when the Glacier of GiƩtroz blocked the course of the Drance de Bagnes. June 16th 1818, reserve reaches disastrous proportions with a lake moreover 2 kilometers out of 200 meters broad and a 60 meters depth. The dam of ice yielded in spite of work of the engineer Ignace Venetz and the flood devastated the valley until Martigny. A similar catastrophe had already occurred in 1595.

Since the 19th century, the glacier passably moved back and does not represent any more one direct risk.

Stopping

The arch dam was built in 1957 and measures 250 meters, it was elevated in 1991. It is classified with the 2nd world rank in the arch dam category. Its crowning is stretched on 520 meters. The stopping blocks water of a catchment area of 113,5 km. The total volume of the stopping is of: 2030000 Mr. the electrical production is ensured by the company Driving forces of Mauvoisin SA Sion and which has several powerplants with Fionnay, Riddes, Chanrion and Champsec.
