Laibach (group)

Laibach is a Slovenien group of industrial Musique . It is one of the first groups of this musical genre to have reached an international repute, following the example Ministry. It owe in particular their success with a resumption of Life is life of Opus, appeared on the album Opus Dei , published by the label Mute, but their fame in industrial environment goes back to their beginnings.

The name of the group is with the historical German name of Ljubljana.

Laibach a long time was compared to the extreme-right-hand side and was suspected of sympathies to the " diable" … It is in true fact that the group had in particular in France the support of the fanzine the Call of the Stag, of orientation Main road-Revolutionist, in which in particular collaborated the musician and owner of label Bertrand Burgalat. For as much, it is today difficult to take Laibach for a " group; nazi" ; at the time of their round for the album Volk , an Israeli flag was in particular visible on scene.

It is impossible to include/understand this group without taking account of the history of the Yugoslavia and Europe in general. This group is the intellectualized and conceptualized version Test Dept. Its brand image is the creation of highly conceptual albums subtly mixing subversion, ideology and poetry. With the album Opus Dei left in 1986, one is perhaps in the quintessence of the industrial expression: To succeed in showing which are the techniques of control of our world by parodying popular anthems of the groups Yes or Queen revealing the ideological contents and adding up implicit these songs and while making fun about it by comparing them with military marches. It is the birth of the Laibach myth in the west (to be noted the piece How the west was won - How one conquered the west - in the same album) and also of the war carried out against this group and his protagonists since.

To retain the box, more confidential, Krst Pod Triglavom left at the same time as Opus Dei . This album joins again with the strong literary, historical and poetic roots of the group but as with its sound experiments based on musical forms less traditional as the rock'n'roll thus less in the west and nearer to the spirit of the east. This box is regarded as the chief of work of the group.

Today the group is done rarer and became a kind of reference impossible to circumvent. It will be noted that Laibach is the most known entity of a nebula of Slovenien artists gathered under the generic name of Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) which includes/understands theater (Noordung), music (Laibach), painting (IRWIN), posters/propaganda (NK), philosophy (Department off pure and practical philosophy).

The thorough readings of the philosopher and Slovenien psychoanalyst Slavoj Zizek and those of the American philosopher Alexei Monroe will help you to find you in this highly provocative labyrinth. “Basically, the work of the groups related to the NSK represents an artistic and cultural answer vis-a-vis the ideological violence imposed by our culture and its theory. ” (Alexei Monroe)
