In spite of the preponderance of the Deserted in the country, the landscapes of the Saudi Arabia offer a great diversity, would be this only in the faces, the forms and the colors of the dune S sandy covering the vast desert extents. The mountains of Asir, characteristic of South-west and very green, strongly contrast with the remainder of the country. The Nadj escarpé of sedimentary origin in the center of the country is only the half-brother of the crystalline plates of the Nadj of the West; as for the covered surfaces of lava in the North and the West of the country, they offer more striking disparity with the immense seas of sand of North, the South and the East, as well a point of view geomorphic as from a cultural point of view.
The peninsula owes the majority of its physical characteristics with the separation Tectonique which gave him birth: the schism of the Arabic peninsula and the Africa of the North-East along the Rift of the Red Sea during the tertiary Era. The first western third of the country is a massive crystalline block of eruptive and metamorphic rocks, accompanied by basalts of more recent formation in the West. In the East of this zone, sedimentary layers cover the remainder of the peninsula until the sultanate of Oman and the area of Al-Hajar, the layers subsiding in direction of the East, but with a succession of younger outcrops as soon as one approaches the Gulf. On the surface, the seas of sand and the dunes paper more than one third of the peninsula, uniting the Nafud in North with the Rub Al-Khali in the South via the arc of dunes of the Dhana.
