Lérida

Lérida ( Catalan Lleida in , single official name since 1977, and Lérida in Spanish) is a city located in the North-East of the Spain, in the autonomous community of Catalogne. It is the capital of the province of the same name. In 2005 it counted: 125000 inhabitants and his urban Surface: 176000 inhabitants.

Climate

History

The city was called formerly Iltrida and Ilerda . In -49, the battle of Ilerda opposed Jules César and Pompée. The Moors seized the city. The count Ramon Berenguer IV managed to reconquer it.

Lérida was also the theater of several battles during the Guerre Thirty Year old

  • the October 7th 1642 sees the victory of the Free-Catalans ordered by the marshal of Mothe at the time of the Bataille of Lérida but the French are forced to withdraw itself.

  • the first seat of Lérida: At May 1646, the French Army ordered by the count d' Arcourt, puts the seat in front of Lérida. It must withdraw the November 22nd.

  • the second head office of Lérida, is a new failure for the ordered French Army this time by Louis II of Bourbon-Cop.

Economy

The Agriculture and the Tourisme are the economic main activities. Agricultural market. Mechanical engineering; textiles; chemistry; agroalimentary.

Teaching

University since 1300. It was during very a long time the single university of Catalonia.

Religious monuments

  • Cathédrale of Seu Calved , the monument emblématique. Its construction started in 1203, under the direction of Father of Coma which was the first project superintendent and the author of the plans. It was devoted under the invocation of Santa Maria on October 31st, 1278. In XIVe century was completed the construction of the cloister and began work from the bell-tower which lasted until 1431.
  • Nouvelle cathedral, neo-classic;
  • Church Sant Llorenç (12th century) with retable (16th century);
