A airline company is an air haulage company: passengers or freight.
Economy
The airline companies are international companies, main roads or, sometimes asserting their national identity which results from their history or their origin.- They are generally companies of important size because of the considerable investments which represent the purchase of planes and financial volumes to brew to ensure the freighting (including the fuel expenditure which has a dominating influence on their financial balance) and the maintenance with a fleet of planes.
-
the charter S (or chartered) propose their services (and their planes) with the freighting by travel agencies or other thirds. They are often synonymous in the spirit with the public of companies at a cheap rate, uncomfortable and seldom specific. This image seems - today - less near to reality than it could not the being (there exist freightings which concerns publicity and the event-driven one, or of the high-end). But this mode of marketing is very current in the tourist air voyage (in particular in Germany, Scandinavia and with the the United Kingdom).
History
Broad outlines
As of the shortly after the First World War, bombers was modified to open commercial connections between the European big cities (Paris, London, Brussels, etc). The February 8th 1919, the Company Farman ensured the first voyage of passengers on Paris-London in 2:37. In 1921, a commercial connection bound San Francisco to New York. It is often reported that the first " vraie" airline company was the Pan American World Airways.
Historically, the most prestigious connections were those which presented specific difficulties. Their opening generally marked the one era passage of pioneers to that one more commercial era. The names of their initateurs remained like those of courageous adventurers: Jean Dagnaux on the African roads, Maurice Noguès in direction of the Far East, Jean Mermoz for the South Atlantic.
The opening of difficult connections also struck imaginations. One remembers the epopee of the Aéropostale reported by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in “ Night flight ” where it showed the adventure of the line Buenos Surface-Santiago of Chile (over the the Andes).
Today, the broad outlines are those which ensure the largest traffic. With this measuring unit, the North Atlantic (connections between European capitals and of the east coast of the United States) is the obvious winner even if it tends to being supplanted by the Northern Pacific. To have practical time slots in the Metropolis S, of an access to the airports major or considered as most adapted to an international traffic represent an indisputable commercial stake, like controlling the platforms of correspondence or hubs .
Recent history
Following the Attacks of September 11th, 2001 made by means of the diversion of four airliners of the type Boeing 767 and Boeing 757, the air transport sector knows one crisis period marked by a generalized fall of the number of passengers. Many airline companies go bankrupt with the image of one of Swissair. This crisis is still amplified in 2003 by the atypical epidemic of Pneumonie as well as the second war of the Gulf and places the majority of the airline companies in difficult situation.
With the beginning of the year 2003, many airline companies (of which in particular American companies) were in serious financial problems and last throw of the programmes of reduction of cost (dismissal, wage cut, reduction in the number of served lines…) and some even had to require the protection of the Chapitre 11, the American law for protection against the Faillite S.
The last years saw the appearance of the companies at low cost on the lines short-distance carrier, offering reduced prices in exchange of a service on limited board and a certain number of constraints like a connection between smaller airports. They are these companies (Ryanair, EasyJet…) who currently record best the perfomances. These companies use modern planes economic while carburizing and designed to be used in continuous flow. On these companies the cost of the fuel represents half of the price of the vol.
Personnel
Among the personnel of the airline companies certain categories are “flying” what enables them to go in many cities (contrary to “crawling”, which remain on the ground):
- the pilots ( Personal Sailing Technical or PNT), closely associated with the immediate safety of the flights and the passengers, resulting from long technical formations, receive wages raised because of their central role in safety. It is sometimes difficult to make them hear reason of an excessive zeal even if it are formed not to be mistaken, and let us recall it, the pilot is the only Master on board (CdB: Commander)
- the stewards and airline hostesses ( Flight crew Commercial or PNC in the jargon) presents the security instructions and serves drinks and plates meal. They are in first line to maintain the discipline. Often, the hostesses (and stewards) are attractive, because of their selection.
