Knattleikr

The Knattleikr is an old sport of ball played by the Viking S in Iceland. The exact rules are little known today but some elements make it possible to see appearances of them.

it was about a collective sport where two teams clashed, each one equipped with a captain. Each player was provided with a stick which was used to him to strike in a balloon. The use of the hands and the contact were authorized. The parts could last a whole day, finally there were shootings with the goals and benches of penalty.

The surface of the ground was traced and was practiced on a surface of ice. Consequently, the Vikings used sometimes tar under the sole of their boots for more adherence.

Knattleikr today

Nowadays, the knattleikr is imitated during the medieval exposures, and is also practiced in certain colleges (with the the United States for example) where the players often have to moderate their degree of violence.
