Kivu

The Kivu is an area and an old province of the east of the Democratic republic of Congo. This area was known with the XIXe century under the name of Maniema or Manyema .

The province existed of 1933 to 1962 (under the name of province of Costermansville until 1947, of the name of its capital) and of 1966 to 1988.

The province was divided into 1988 between three provinces, the North-Kivu, the South-Kivu and the Maniema.

The Kivu is also a lake at the border between the DRC and the Rwanda.

Many massacres were perpetrated there between 1996 and 2005 by the rebellious generals of the Congolese Rassemblement for the democracy (RCD), primarily the generals Nkundabatware and Mutebesi.
