Kingdom of Majorque
The kingdom of Majorque indicates strictly speaking the political entity created at the time of the conquest of the island of Majorque in 1229 by the king Jacques Ier d' Aragon within the framework of the Reconquista.
This kingdom of Majorque extended little by little on the unit from the islands Balearic Islands (Ibiza was conquered in 1235 and Minorque in 1287). The conquest of the island lasted of 1229 with 1232. In 1231, king Jacques entrusts the seigniory of the island of Majorque to his/her cousin the infant Pierre of Portugal, then in 1244 against Valencian seigniories exchanges it to him before again entrusting it to him in 1254. To died from infant Pierre in 1256, the seigniory of the island is allocated to the king. The expression “kingdom of Majorque” indicates also political construction born in 1262 for the benefit of the second wire of Jacques Ier, the king Jacques II of Majorque, which gathered in addition to the kingdom of Majorque, the counties of Roussillon and Cerdagne and the Seigneurie of Montpellier. Jacques II of Majorque reigned on this heritage in 1276 with died of his father. Perpignan, where the kings built a castle called Palais of the kings de Majorque, was the capital of this kingdom. The kings worked out a label strict court governed by the palatine Lois imitated with the Low Middle Ages.
In 1286 the king Alphonse III of Aragon, in conflict with his/her uncle Jacques II of Majorque which had been turned against him at the time of the Croisade of Aragon, confiscated to him the islands of Majorque and Ibiza. They were restored to him by the king Jacques II of Aragon, increased island of Minorque, with the Traité of Anagni of 1295 (in fact it was necessary to await 1298 so that the restitution is effective). The kings d' Aragon then made a point of putting kings de Majorque under their vassalage, which led to the rupture in the middle of the 14th century.
In 1343, the king Pierre IV of Aragon invades the Balearic Islands and in 1344 the counties of Roussillon and Cerdagne. The king Jacques III of Majorque sold to the king Philippe IV of France his last possession, the Seigneurie of Montpellier in 1349 to try to reconquer Majorque, attempt which failed the November 25th 1349, with the Bataille of Llucmajor, where Jacques III of Majorque lost the life. Since then, the kingdom of Majorque remained integrated into the Couronne of Aragon, then with Spanish monarchy.
