King Crimson
King Crimson is a British group of rock'n'roll of progressive style , founded in 1969 by Robert Fripp with the the United Kingdom.
The personnel of King Crimson often changed with the length of the history of the group, Robert Fripp remaining the only permanent member, although he stated not to be inevitably the chief of the group. For him, King Crimson is “a manner of making the things” and the musical constancy which persisted through the history of the group, in spite of the continual change members, reflects this point of view.
History
In 1967, the guitarist Robert Fripp answers a classified of the brothers Gilles, Mike and Peter respectively beater and bass player (Those are in the search of a player of keyboard). In 1968, the group Gilles, Gilles & Fripp is signed by Decca and records an album, The Cheerful Insanity off Gilles, Gilles and Fripp . A little later Ian MacDonald (wind keyboards and instruments) joint with them.
In 1969, after the ousting of Peter Gilles, replaced by Greg Lake, Fripp, McDonald, Lake & Gilles form King Crimson with the poet Peter Sinfield. The group starts to play in the United Kingdom (in particular several concerts in Marquee Club) and records its first album In the Court off the Crimson King between two concerts, album which will make date in the history of the music rock'n'roll, mixture of progressive, modern music and jazz. The group flies away then for the United States. At the end of the US round, McDonald and Gilles leave the group followed little time afterwards by Lake which will join Keith Emerson to found with Carl Palmer the group Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
In 1970, Fripp and Sinfield continue the adventure in studio with various musicians close to Keith Tippett. The group records off In the Wake Poseidon (with the brothers Gilles and Lake), which adopts a structure and imaginary near to the preceding album, allowing him to reinforce its success. But the inventiveness of Robert Fripp makes him change first once of course and the following album, Lizard , more crossbred of darker environment and wind instruments (horn, oboe, trumpet), désarçonne a big part of its public.
In 1971, a new group for the scene is finally formed. In addition to Fripp and Sinfield (which uses synthetizer VCS3 to create sound effects), it consists of Boz Burrell (low and song), Mel Hakes (flute, sax and keyboards) and Ian Wallace (battery). The group records Islands . During the round, tensions appear and Sinfield is encouraged to leave the group. The other members follow, a little later at the end of the US round (1972) leaving Fripp alone. An album live Earthbound, will be drawn from the round.
At the end of 1972, Fripp creates new King Crimson with John Wetton (low and song), David Cross (violin and keyboard), Bill Bruford (battery) and Jamie Muir (percussions). This last will quickly leave the group before the recording of the album Larks' Tongues in Aspic (even if it takes part in this recording, it will not appear any more in concert with the group). The piece Larks' Tongues in Aspic, share 2 will be plagiarized by Pierre Bachelet and Herve Roy for the music of the film Emmanuelle .
In 1973 appears Starless and Bible Black recorded partially in concert, in particular with the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam.
In 1974, the group separates from David Cross and the trio Fripp, Wetton, Bruford records Red with the collaboration of former members of the group (McDonald and Collins). Following this recording, Fripp decides to put a term at King Crimson, issuing the end of the dinosaurs groups and wanting to be from now on “a small free, mobile and intelligent cell”.
The year 1975 will be remembered by the exit of the U.S.A. , recording in concert of outstanding titles of the group (Fripp, Cross, Wetton and Bruford).
At the end of the years 1970, Fripp decides to return on the music scene. After various collaborations, it forms a group named “Discipline” with Adrian Belew (guitar and song), Tony Levin (low) and Bill Bruford. After some concerts the group changes name and becomes a new version of King Crimson. This version will leave 3 albums: Discipline (1981), Happy (1982) and Three off has Perfect Pair (1984). At the end of 1984, King Crimson is put out of night light.
With the beginning of the year 1990, Fripp creates new compositions which seem to him suitable for a new version of King Crimson. Legal problems with its old recording company EG push back to 1994 the first repetitions of the new group made up on the basis of a double trio: Robert Fripp (guitar), Trey Gunn (Stick or “touch guitar”), Stalemate Mastelotto (battery and percussions) and Adrian Belew (guitar and song), Tony Levin (low and Stick), Bill Bruford (battery and percussions). In 1994 leaves VROOOM mini-CD followed by the album THRAK . In 1996, after unfruitful sessions, sub-groups named “ProjeKct” made up from 3 to 4 musicians of the double trio are formed to make evolve/move the music. Bill Bruford quickly leaves the group and it appears increasingly difficult for Tony Levin to continue the adventure King Crimson because of its various engagements (in particular with Seal and Peter Gabriel).
The quartet remaining off leaves in 2000 The ConstruKction Light , then in 2003 The Power to Believe . Following the round, Trey Gunn decides to leave the group to be devoted primarily to a multi-media project named Quodia. It is replaced by Tony Levin.
In 2005, the group enters a new procedure of research and development. ProjeKct 6 (Adrian Belew with the battery and Robert Fripp with the guitar) worked already in studio and appeared in concert in 2006 in particular in first part of Porcupine Tree.
