Kelowna

Kelowna is a provincial town of Colombia-British, with the Canada.

Population

Kelowna counts 105.621 inhabitants (2005). The metropolitan region counts 162.555 inhabitants. It is about the third center in importance in the province, after Vancouver and Victoria. The growth rate of the population of 1996 to 2001 was of 8,2%, compared to 4,9% for the whole of the Colombia-British. The currency of the east city: “Fruitful in Unity”, which one can translate by “Profitable in the unit”.

Kelowna is located on bank is lake Okanagan, in full heart of the valley of the same name. Kelowna is located at 400 kilometers at the east of Vancouver, 600 kilometers in the west of Calgary and 150 kilometers in the north of the border between Canada and the United States of America.

History

The Oblats establish a mission in there 1859. It is them which will plant, a few years later, the first fruit trees. In 1905, the city is made up. It counts 600 inhabitants. The name Kelowna is borrowed of the Indian and wants to say “Grizzli”. Kelowna quickly becomes an important regional center. Forest industry settles there. The orchards multiply. In May 1914, the S Sicamous, a long boat of 200 feet, starts to transport passengers on the lake Okanagan, of Penticton in the south until Vernon in north. In 1925, the railroad arrives at Kelowna. The city crosses the course of the 5.000 inhabitants in 1941. It counts 13.000 in 1961 of them. A floating bridge is built in 1958 to connect two banks of the lake Okanagan. That all the more facilitates the transport of harvests. In 1963, the Okanagan college starts to offer courses to the local population.

An important forest fire, in 2003, involves the evacuation of 30.000 inhabitants of Kelowna. 200 houses are destroyed. Kelowna celebrates its centenary in May 2005. The same year, the construction of a new bridge to connect two banks of the lake Okanagan began.

Economy

The fruiticulteurs abound. One cultivates there apple, fishing, pear, cherry and plum, inter alia. The product of the vineyards of the area is sold everywhere in the world. Since 2005, the first Amerindian vintage is produced by the indigenous community Osoyoos. ---- Forest industry continues to employ many citizens. But it is the service sector which now counts the most employees. It is as important to note as forest industry makes come much from money to the province with become money of the taxes employed to the goods. ---- Tourism also gains in importance. The tourists are attracted by the good weather (nearly 2.000 hours of sunning per year), by the legendary monster Ogopogo, gigantic snake which is supposed to live at the bottom of the lake Okanagan. ---- They also come there for the water sports in summer, the Alpine skiing in winter. Wakefest, it is a spectacle which attracts thousands of people each year, with attracts heap of candidates who take part one against the other.

---- To accommodate the tourists and people of businesses, it there with the international airport of Kelowna. For the first time, in 2005, the airport will have accommodated more than one million passengers. That makes of them the ten or eleventh more stocked Canada. It is also known as the airport which grows fastest in Canada. International connections are generally between Seattle and Kelowna. Since 2006, Air Deckchair established service has Las Vegas and in Mexico ---- The tourists also come for the regattas. The event, principal estival attraction, is held since 1906. Kelowna belongs off to the Regional District Central Okanagan.
