Kehl

Kehl amndt Rhein is a German commune of almost 35  000 inhabitants of which 17  500 in the center town. Located on Right Bank of the the Rhine at the level of the Island at the Ears of Strasbourg, it depends on the Land of Bade-Wurtemberg and on the district ( Kreis ) of the Ortenau.

Set fire to at the 18th century, the center town was rebuilt on the basis of checkerboard plan.

The habitat of the commune is distributed between a city centers located at the edge of the the Rhine and of the villages ( Stadtteile ), integrated into the communal round of applause at the time of the communal reform undertaken between 1965 and 1975 in the Länder of old the the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). This distribution in several urban entities explains the use of the term of city centers for the urban core historical and.

History

Kehl is mentioned for the first time in 1038. In 1338 the first permanent bridge between Kehl and Strasbourg is set up. In 1678 the city is annexed by the France and is regarded as a section of the defense system of Strasbourg. In fact, Kehl is transformed into a fortress in 1683 by the French architect Vauban.

In 1774, controlled by the Grand Duchy of Bade, Kehl receives ordinances and privileges by the Margrave Karl Friedrich de Bade. After several changes of sovereignty (France, Bade and Austria) the city turns over to the country of Bade in 1815 and the fortress is dismantled.

In 1861 the first railway bridge is built and the first direct connection between Paris and established Vienna. The correspondences are carried out then in Kehl.

After the Bataille of France Kehl becomes a district of Strasbourg. This state will continue until in 1953 when the city turns over in the bosom of the the Federal Republic of Germany.

Garden of two banks

From April at October 2004, Kehl accommodated the festival of the landscape art ( Landesgartenschau ), organized in collaboration with Strasbourg. Cultural event of importance in Germany, it often attracts nearly three million visitors. The point of organ of this demonstration was the inauguration of the Garden of Two Banks, transborder park which was the object of a contest gained by the German team Brosk (Paysagiste) and Agirbas-Wienstroer (Architecte S town planners). The park, created on two banks of the Rhine, is equipped with a footbridge in its center, designed by the architect Paris IEN Marc Mimram. German side, one declines the concept of the floral festivals and one presents technologies related to the Environnement. French side, one insists more on an artistic and conceptual approach with 19 “  gardens éphémères  ” on the topic of water.

This transborder demonstration made it possible official to launch the process of constitution of a Eurodistrict between CUS and the Ortenau, with the installation of a GLCT (local grouping of transborder co-operation).
