Karl Landsteiner

Karl Landsteiner (June 14th 1868 with Vienna in Austria - June 26th 1943), was a Biologiste and Austrian Médecin . One owes him the first system of grading of the blood groups, the Système ABO.

He is the son of Leopold Landsteiner, a Journaliste and magazine publisher, like juriste. When Karl is six years old, his/her father dies and it is raised by his mother, Fanny Hess.

In 1891, it obtains a diploma of medicine to the Université of Vienna. As he studied at Emil Fisher and others, he also has a solid formation in Chimie.

In 1908, it becomes Professor of Pathologie at the University of Vienna. In 1916, it Marie with Helen Wlasto, and their couple will have a son. Following the First World War, it leaves Austria for the Netherlands. In 1922, it joined the Institut Rockefeller ( Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research ) with New York, and remains there for the remaining one of its days (even after its retirement in 1939).

During this period, he becomes American citizen . Karl Landsteiner dies of a Heart attack which has surprised it whereas he worked in his laboratory.

One owes him the development in 1909 of the modern system of classification of the blood groups, as well as the immunochimy of the Haptène S. In 1940, in collaboration with Alexander Wiener, it identifies the factor Rh, person in charge of the haemolytic Maladie of the newborn.

It received the Nobel Prize of medicine in 1930 for its work on the blood groups.
