Kantō

The Kantō (関東地方, Kantō-chihō ) is a geographical division of Honshū, the principal island of the Japan.

The name of Kantō refers to the area located at the east (東) of the check-point of Hakone (関所); Kantō means literally is barrier , in reference to the check-points or the barriers which were positioned, during the Period Edo, on the road of Tōkaidō (which connected Edo to Kyōto).

This area is made of seven prefectures of the area of Tōkyō:

The limits of the area of Kantō correspond roughly to those of the Plaine of Kantō, bein that this one accounts for only approximately 40% surface of the area. The remainder is consisted of the zones of hills and mountains bordering the plain.

Heart of the feudal capacity during the Period Kamakura, then again during the Period Edo, Kantō became the true nerve center of Japan. The area of Tōkyō, and particularly the metropolis Tōkyō - Yokohama, shelters not only the seat of the Japanese government but also a great number of universities and cultural institutions, a considerable population and a great number of industries.

Although the majority of the plain of Kantō are occupied by residential constructions, commercial or industrial, the Agriculture always holds an important place to with it. The principal culture is there the Riz, and the peripheral zone around the agglomeration of Tōkyō - Yokohama was arranged in order to develop the market gardening to with it bound for the Mégalopole.

The area of Kantō densément is developed, urbanized and industrialized of Japan. Tōkyō and Yokohama form there a vast urban fabric with many industries, as well heavy as light, around the Baie of Tōkyō. Light industry also develops inside the grounds around urban centres of less importance.

Kantō (関東) is also the name in Japanese of the Chinese area of the Guandong, which gave its name to the Armée with Guandong or Armed with Kantō (関東軍 kantōgun in Japanese).
