Kamigyō-ku

Kamigyo-ku (上京ー区) is one of the eleven districts of the town of Kyōto. Located at the center of the current city, it previously occupied the northern side of the old capital. The river “Kamogawa” 鴨川 runs with its Eastern limit.

This district was formerly the residential district of the aristocratic classes of the old capital. Currently, it is especially the district of the imperial palace of Kyōto, but also that of the sanctuaries of Kitano Tenmangu, Seimei, and Nishijin-ori.

In 2005, the population of Kamigyo-ku was of 83  124 inhabitants.
