Kadima קדימה (“Ahead” in French) is a Israeli Political party created by Ariel Sharon the November 24th 2005. Its orientation is center on the criteria of the Israeli political chessboard, and its slogan is “One continues the front one! ”.

Having obtained 28 seats out of 120 with the Knesset at the time of the legislative elections of the March 28th 2006, the party from now on directed by Ehoud Olmert is brought to form a coalition government, in particular with the Labor of Amir Peretz which obtained 20 seats.

Origin

Ariel Sharon began her career in tendencies more left, in particular in the party Shlomtzion. In 1973, it takes part in the foundation of the Likoud, dominant party of the Israeli nationalist right, which it directs from 1999 to 2005.

In 2005, the opposition of a majority of Likoud to the Disengagement plan of the occupied territories, the competition with Benjamin Netanyahu, her growing popularity in the surveys, the election of Amir Peretz to the workers party and the resignation of the Labor Ministers for the government of national union, lead Ariel Sharon to leave Likoud and to create the party Kadima .

Fourteen of the 40 deputies of the Likoud, as well as part of the government, whose vice Prime Minister, the Minister for justice, the minist of tourism, the Minister for the internal security, the Minister for transport and the Minister for Labor, are attached to the Kadima party. The November 24th 2005, Ariel Sharon deposits officially the statutes of the party and a list of 144 members.

The first surveys after the creation of the party show that it is at the head Israeli political parties.

When Ariel Sharon is hospitalized following “serious” an brain attack, Ehud Olmert (then Deputy Prime Minister) occupies starting from the January 4th 2006, the post of Prime Minister by interim to replace this one, as the Israeli law envisages it.

The January 16th 2006, Kadima approves the nomination of Ehoud Olmert to the head of the party, following the disease of Ariel Sharon.

March 28th, 2006, Kadima gains the legislative elections of the 17th Knesset (Israeli Parliament). It gains 29 seats out of the 120 (what was less than this surveys predicted with Ariel Sharon when he was the chief), and formed a coalition with the members of the Labor Party, the Shass and the Gil (pensioners), which gives in the majority an orientation of center-left. The October 23rd 2006, the coalition is extended to the ultra-nationalists of Israel Beytenou whose leader Avigdor Liberman is named Ministre for the strategic Businesses and sixth Deputy Prime Minister.

Discusses on the name of the party

The choice of Kadima makes controversy. Indeed, Kadima is translated literally into Italian Avanti , who was the slogan of the black Chemises of Benito Mussolini. Survivors of the Shoah considered to be this choice unhappy.

The name of Ahrayout leoumit (“national Responsibility”) had been announced initially for this new political training.

In controversy, “Kadimah” was also the name given to the association gathering of the Jewish students of Vienna during the time of the creation of the fine Sionisme XIX {{E}} century, beginning XX {{E}}.
