Käärmeluodot

The Käärmeluodot are a group of three small island S uninhabited of Finland located near the capital Helsinki, in the Golfe of Finland, in the south-west of the island of Lauttasaari.

Toponymy

Käärmeluodot in Finnish or Ormkobbarna in Swedish means Îlots of the Snake .

The three islands are Western Käärmeluoto (in Finnish Läntinen Käärmeluoto , in Swedish Västra Ormkobben ), Käärmeluoto Is (in Finnish Itäinen Käärmeluoto , in Swedish Östra Ormkobben ) and Northern Käärmeluoto (in Finnish Pohjoinen Käärmeluoto , in Swedish Norra Ormkobben ).

Geography

Käärmeluodot are attached to the district Lauttasaari of the commune of Helsinki. They belong to the Archipel of Helsinki and are bathed by water of the Golfe of Finland located in the the Baltic. Western Käärmeluoto, of lengthened and directed form North-South, is largest of the islands (230 meters length on 130 meters broad). It is surrounded in north by Northern Käärmeluoto, of elliptic form (170 meters by 120 meters), in the east by Käärmeluoto Is (100 meters by 70 meters), a whole of several Récif S very close, and with south-west by a small reef. The islands closest to Käärmeluodot are the inhabited island of Mäntysaari in the North-West and the uninhabited island of Käärmensaari in south-west. The large island of Lauttasaari in the North-East separates them from the peninsula where is the downtown area and the wearing of Helsinki.

The Granit which constitutes Käärmeluodot was exposed and plane at the time of different the glacial periods. During the withdrawal of the ices which recovered all Northern Europe, the islands were under water and emerged with the favor of the isostatic rebound. Rock, escarpées and comprising only one small Beach of Sand on the northern coast of Western Käärmeluoto, they are covered with thin a Forêt except Käärmeluoto Is which is deprived of vegetation.

Activities

These three islands are uninhabited but the Camping being authorized on Western and Northern Käärmeluoto, a corner cooks covered there is present just as toilets and a ring of Mouillage for the boats at the west of Western Käärmeluoto. A service of collection of waste is organized there.
