Joseph Bonaparte , (born with Corte, the January 7th 1768 and died with Florence the July 28th 1844), lawyer, Diplomatic and Soldier, king de Naples, then king d' Espagne, is the older brother of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Biography
It was intended for the bar when the rise in his/her brother calls it with the public affairs. In 1794, it marries with Cuges-the-Pines, Julie Clary (1771 - 1845), girl of a trader of Marseilles. They have two children: Zénaïde Bonaparte (1801 - 1854) and Charlotte Bonaparte (1802 - 1839).It is, in 1796, named by the Corsica appointed with the Conseil of the Five hundred, then sent in embassy to Rome (1797); but it leaves this city after the murder of the Général Duphot, its Aide-de-camp. It signs the Paix of Lunéville (1801), and the Paix of Amiens (1802). It receives the title of imperial Prince when his brother is crowned, it is placed by him in 1806 on the throne of Naples, where it is made like of the people, without being able to rejoin the noble ones.
In 1808, it abolishes the Spanish Enquiry which will be restored by Ferdinand VII.
As king of Naples, it reforms the monastic orders and reorganizes the legal system, educational and financial. It leaves the kingdom of Naples to his beautiful brother Murat when it is named by his brother king of Spain where its attempts at reform have less success and is seen twice forced to leave the capital, and is tiny room to return in France in 1813 after the defeat of Vitoria.
General lieutenant of the Empire in 1814 and with the Hundred Days, it runs up unceasingly with the marshals of Empire, like Soult and Masséna, it cannot control the events, leaves Paris with the approach of allied and accompanies the Empress with Blois. For this reason, it is one of the principal persons in charge of the failure of the French military operations.
After the abdication of his brother, he lives has Bordentown in the state of Pennsylvania meadows of Philadelphia under the name of count of Survilliers , being made there build the residence of Point-Breeze and dealing with agronomy. After the death of his daughter Charlotte Bonaparte, it returns in Europe where it lives successively the England then the Italy.
The name of Survilliers was given thereafter to the village where it remained, village located at the south of Senlis.
Joseph Bonaparte left a very bad memory in Spain where it was called Pepe Botella (Jojo the bottle) because of leaning sound for alcohol. Simple man in his manners, Joseph did not have the specific quality with the high role that his/her brother made him play. He liked and cultivated the letters; however it is wrongly that one allotted to him a poem in 10 songs entitled Napoleon , and devoted to the hero of his family (this poem is of Hubert-Louis Lorquet, professor with the Ile de France, which published it in this island in 1822). King Joseph left Mémoires and a Correspondance , which were published by Albert of the Break-in of 1852 with 1854 (Paris, 10 volumes in-8), and which throws one great day on the history of the Empire.
