Jose Martí

Jose Marti (January 28th 1853 with Havana - 1895) is a politician and a cuban poet. He is certainly the man more glorifié by the cuban people, which regard it as largest Martyr and the Apôtre of the fight for independence.

Biographical indications

As of the 15 years age, it engages in the anti-colonial fight and founds a nationalist newspaper. It is stopped for treason and is condemned to six years of forced labors one year later. Released six months later and assigned with residence, it was off-set in Spain during four years. Its exile continued between the France and the Mexico. A Amnistie of the political prisoners enables him to return to Cuba, where it was stopped and returned again to Spain. It settles with New York, where lived many the exiled cuban ones, and during the fifteen years which followed it devoted without slackening to the political activity within the cuban revolutionary party. It unloads on Cuba in 1895, and is killed at the time of its first battle against the Spaniards.

Chronology

1853: Jose Marti Pérez is born there with Havana
1869: It publishes in a newspaper its drama “Abdala”, Réquisitoire against the Spain.
1870: A court condemns it to purge six years of work forcés.
1871: It is initially sent to the Île of the Pines, then off-set with Cadiz. It is registered at the University of Madrid, writes much and published a booklet entitled “the Spanish Republic in front of the Cuban Revolution”
1874: After having obtained a license in Philosophy and Letters, it embarks for Paris. One year later, it arrives at the Mexico and becomes collaborator of a great review;
1877: He is professor of French, English, German Littérature, Italian, of history and philosophy, at the Central School of the Guatemala;
1878: On board the “Nueva Barcelona”, it arrives at Havana. He seeks to open a lawyer office, but the authorization is refused to him;
1878: One finds it with New York. It there will pronounce several conferences and will publish many articles. One year later, professor with Caracas, it puts the last hand at his collection of poems “Ismaëlillo”;
1894: He travels without stop, current of New York to Mexico City, publishing articles Révolutionnaire S. He develops a plan of invasion, but the American authorities sequester weapons and boats;
1895: Coming from Haiti, it arrives at Cuba. It is proclaimed Major Général of the Army of Release. It is inserted in the mountains of Baracoa, in the search of Maceo. In May of the same year, he dies in the combat of Dos Rios.

Well before everyone, Marti, this brilliant poet, had provided that the Yankee would replace the Spaniard. For him, it was “to better die without fatherland, but without Master”. All its life, it fought the Spanish Tyrannie. Fidel Castro took as a starting point its proclamation “Montecristi”, the showpiece Révolutionnaire of untiring Jose Marti.

This last has a monument in its honor, located in the town of Quebec, with the Canada.
