John Nance Garner

John Nance " Jack" cactus; Garner (November 22nd 1868 - November 7th 1967) was an American politician, elected official of the Texas, member of the Democratic party and 32ème Vice-président of the United States of the March 4th 1933 with the January 20th 1941 at the side of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Garner was born in Texas, of ascent Indian Cherokee on the paternal side.

Lawyer then judge in Texas, it is elected of 1898 with 1902 with the room of the representatives of the state.

In 1902, Garner is elected as a democrat with the Chambre of the Representatives of the United States in the new district of the south rural Texas. He will be re-elected with 14 recoveries until 1933.

In 1929, it is selected as leader of the democratic minority to the room of the Congress. In 1931, he becomes the Announcer about it.

In 1932, Garner is presented to the democratic primary educations for being elected President of the United States. He then faces the Gouverneur of New York, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. When this one becomes the favorite with the nomination, Garner rejoins it after having obtained the certainty to be the candidate with the vice-presidency.

In November 1932, he is re-elected with the room of the representatives at the same time as he is elected vice-president with the victory of Roosevelt against the outgoing president Herbert Hoover.

The relations between Roosevelt and Garner worsened in particular during the second mandate. Garner supported more federal interventions in particular to break the strikes. It wished a balanced federal budgetary balance and was opposed to the increase in the number of judges to the Supreme court of the United States or insertions of the executive in the businesses of the Congress.

Garner became the representative of the traditional Democratic party against the partisans of New Deal rooseveltien.

In 1938 and 1939, many democrats invite Garner to be presented against Roosevelt to the elections of 1940. The surveys gave Garner favorite among the democratic voters in optics where Roosevelt renonçait to be represented.

Opposed to a third mandate of Roosevelt, Garner maintained her candidature.

At the time of the primary educations of 1940, Garner was largely beaten by Roosevelt, which is then re-elected for a third mandate.

In January 1941, Garner leaves the place to her successor and puts an end to 46 years of political career.

It is withdrawn in Uvalde in Texas. It remained close to Harry Truman.

The November 22nd 1963, 95 years old, Garner had a phone conversation with the president John F. Kennedy, visits some in Texas and in which it informed him of its total support. Kennedy was assassinated a few hours later.

Garner died in 1967, at a few days of her 99 years.

Garner State Park, located at 30 miles north of Uvalde, was baptized in her honor.
