Johann Gustav Droysen

Johann Gustav Droysen , born the July 6th 1808 with Treptow, in Poméranie (current Germany) and deceased the June 10th 1884 with Berlin, was a German historian.

Biography

Johann Gustav Droysen is the son of a military chaplain. In its childhood, whereas his/her father became Pasteur close to Stettin occupied by the French, it attends several scenes of battle. It is undoubtedly there that is born its attachment with the Prussia. He studies with the Gymnasium (secondary education) of Stettin then to the university of Berlin.

In 1829, he teaches at the school of the Graue Kloster (“gray Brothers”), one of oldest of Berlin, then becomes in 1833 Privatdozent. During this period, it is interested in the ancient Greece, publishing a translation of Eschyle and a paraphrase of Aristophane. In 1833, it publishes Geschichte Alexanders of Grossen ( Histoire of Alexandre Large the ), its most famous work, which remained a reference a long time on the subject. By doing this, it opens the way at a new German historical school, marked by the thought of Hegel. It publishes then several works on the successors of Alexandre the Large one, gathered under the title Geschichte of Hellenismus ( Histoire of the hellenism ). It that it forges the term “hellenistic”, applying to the period active of died there of Alexandre (323 av. J. - C.) until the suicide of Cléopâtre VII (30 av. J. - C.).

In 1840, it is named professor of history to Kiel. It engages in a political struggle in favor of the rights of the the Schleswig-Holstein against the king Christian VIII of Denmark. In 1848, he is elected at the Parliament of Frankfurt and is used as secretary at the committee charged to write a constitution. Fervent supporter of Prussia, it withdraws himself in 1849 when the king of Prussia declines the imperial crown. He continues to support the rights of Schlewig-Holstein and publishes Die Herzogthümer Schieswig-Holstein und das Königreich Dänemark seit dem Jahre 1800 ( the Danish policy with regard to the duchies of Schieswig-Holstein ).

In 1851, it obtains a station with the Université of Iéna before passing in 1859 to the university of Berlin. To this period, it is devoted almost exclusively to the Prussian history. Thus, in 1851, it publishes a biography of the count Yorck von Wartenburg before launching out in monumental a Geschichte DER preussischen Politik ( Histoire of the Prussian policy ) of 1855 to 1884.
